Copywriting Courses: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

If you’d love to learn how to be a successful freelance writer you’ll probably realise that the best way to make great money doing that is to enrol in a copywriting course because making money as a copywriter is much more lucrative than other forms of copywriting.

Trouble is, which course do you choose?

Online you’ll find all sorts of courses advertised. Some are simply large downloadable e-books which will teach you the principles.

You could do a university degree – perhaps a Degree in Communications, Advertising or Public Relations. A University degree obviously looks great on a resume but if you’re keen to kick start your career now, waiting three plus years before you finish your degree isn’t an option.

There are a variety of face-to-face courses and workshops available. Many of them though, are more like seminars which are great for inspiration, high on energy but low on concrete principles that you can put to work. Don’t get me wrong, you can discover some awesome copywriting principles at these events and they often share some really excellent information. It’s just that these events work out to be very costly in comparison with the amount of resource material that you get.

When you surf on the internet you’ll find a variety of manual-based, home study courses where you can either download a PDF version of the course or you are sent some DVDs or manuals in the mail. You buy the material and then you’re left to fend for yourself.

When you consider that one of the greatest opportunities for learning and growth is feedback, it makes sense to do a course where you get live feedback from a tutor on an ongoing basis. Most don’t offer you the opportunity to talk to anyone at all.

So – choose a course that enables you to get that feedback from working copywriters and consultants.

And talking about working, it’s one thing to learn how to write great copy for a client. It’s another thing altogether getting paid work as a freelance copywriter. Knowing where to find the leads. Knowing how to sell your services. Most courses don’t teach you how to sell or only give you the theory. And most don’t provide you with prospective clients.

And another thing again to run a profitable writing business. Learning the mechanics of a running a profitable writing business is a very important element in the mix. Choose a course that gives you that valuable knowledge.
